COVID-19 Update

A message from the Board of Directors

To our guests, volunteers, sponsors and partners,

As we have seen over the past week, there has been an escalation of cancellations of events of all sizes in response to COVID-19. We have been monitoring the situation closely, as the situation has been constantly evolving. Ultimately, based on the official recommendation of the Ministry of Health and the Region of Waterloo, we have made the difficult and responsible choice to cancel the 2020 Grand River Festival, originally scheduled for May 6-9 in downtown Kitchener.

While our work is focused on bringing the community together through the shared experience of film, we also have a commitment to ensure the health, safety and well-being of our volunteers, guests and community. As such, in addition to the cancellation of the week-long festival in May, we will be cancelling all film screenings for the remainder of March and the month of April. This includes CineSeries screenings planned for April 1 and 22, and CIGI screenings planned for March 18 and April 7. Any individual tickets purchased for these events will be fully refunded. For CineSeries Season Pass holders, your passes will be honoured through the entire calendar year of 2020 (as opposed to ending April 30, 2020).

This is an unusual time and we encourage everyone to act responsibly and with consideration for those who are most vulnerable in our community. We encourage you to take proactive measures to help prevent the spread of COVID-19:

  • Stay home when you are sick, except to get medical care

  • Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands

  • Clean frequently touched surfaces and objects daily

Thank you for your kindness and understanding as we navigate this unknown territory. We look forward to gathering together soon, sharing in the delight and inspiration a good film can bring.
