Passes and Ticket Sales are now open

WATERLOO, April 5, 2021 – The Grand River Film Festival (GRFF), Waterloo Region’s longest running film festival announced their showcase of films for the 2021 season. This year’s festival will be the longest and largest season to date with eight features and 23 shorts from 12 countries in eight different languages. “We have amazing local, Canadian and international independent films coming to Waterloo Region for the first time. These are films that aren’t available anywhere else, and you can watch them all from the comfort of your home,” says Michael Clark, programming chair. This year’s festival will be held virtually through an online platform called Eventive from May 3 to 8, 2021.

Following on its tradition of promoting local filmmakers, the festival will showcase winners of the You Only Die Once short film contest, developed in partnership with Hospice of Waterloo Region. “The hospice put out a call for local filmmakers to submit original short films that open up a positive conversation around death and dying, and the work the Hospice does. We’ll be screening the winners in two ways: as part of a short film program featuring both local and world films that look at death and dying from a modern, affirming experience; and, in front of the feature film Wildfire, an Irish film about two sisters struggling with grief,” shares Clark. Clark continues, “To help get our community used to the virtual platform, we are happy to offer a free screening of A Starting Point, a locally made film documenting a 65 km trek across Waterloo Region to raise awareness about homelessness and the housing crisis.” This free screening is available on GRFF’s eventive platform April 26 through May 8, with patrons encouraged to pre-order to guarantee a space. Tickets are available to purchase individually and as part of a five- or 10-film pass. “Films are available May 3 at noon, and will be available until May 8 or until they sell out. Reserve your seats as soon as possible!” adds Clark.
